Cannot start RabbitMQ - {"init terminating in do_boot",{undef,[

This post has NOT been accepted by the mailing list yet.
When I try to start RabbitMQ I get the message

me@server.mydomain.com[sbin]# ./rabbitmq-server
{"init terminating in do_boot",{undef,[{rabbit_prelaunch,start,[]},{init,start_it,1},{init,start_em,1}]}}

Crash dump was written to: erl_crash.dump
init terminating in do_boot ()

I have some questions, comments, and details.

I installed erlang.
It is in usr/bin
I can do
me@server.mydomain.com[rabbitmq_server-3.6.5]# erl
Erlang R14B04 (erts-5.8.5) [source] [64-bit] [smp:2:2] [rq:2] [async-threads:0] [kernel-poll:false]

Eshell V5.8.5  (abort with ^G)

question #1
1. Did I even install the right rabbitmq??
I am using a webhosting company. The unix I am
  running is
  x86_64 GNU/Linux
I downloaded the rabbitmq for generic unix:
Is this correct one to use?
question #2 Did I install it right?
The install instructions basically said to install
   to your directory.
I just untarred it to my directory I am working in.
   me@server.mydomain.com[rabbitmq_server-3.6.5]# pwd
An ls of that directory looks like this.
   me@server.mydomain.com[rabbitmq_server-3.6.5]# ls
ebin                            LICENSE-BSD-base64js   LICENSE-MIT-Sammy060
etc                             LICENSE-BSD-glMatrix   LICENSE-MIT-SockJS
include                         LICENSE-EPL-OTP        LICENSE-MPL2
INSTALL                         LICENSE-MIT-EJS10      LICENSE-MPL-RabbitMQ
LICENSE                         LICENSE-MIT-Flot       plugins
LICENSE-APACHE2-ExplorerCanvas  LICENSE-MIT-jQuery164  sbin
LICENSE-APL2-Rebar              LICENSE-MIT-Mochi      share
LICENSE-APL2-Stomp-Websocket    LICENSE-MIT-Mochiweb   var

and when I go to sbin it shows this

me@server.mydomain.com[sbin]# ls
erl_crash.aug27.dump  rabbitmqctl        rabbitmq-env      rabbitmq-server
erl_crash.dump        rabbitmq-defaults  rabbitmq-plugins

Is this all there is to the installation?
Does it look like it is installed right?
I set an environment variable  RABBITMQ_HOME
question #3
I did all this as me, not root, Is that what I should
   I ran it as me.
question #4.

Please let me know if you have any ideas on this. Thank you.
